How our Reading Recovery Course will help your child
During the course, your child will receive one week of undivided attention from an experienced literacy specialist. Together, they will work through fun and engaging exercises that are selected based on your child’s specific needs and preferences.
We ascribe to the scientifically-proven strategies of Orton-Gillingham and effectively build the skills required for more proficient reading, writing, and spelling. We are experts in creating a positive educational environment that targets skill development and builds confident learners.
A child’s remedial journey can take up to two years of consistent support. Our Reading Recovery Course front-loads the learning experience with fundamental tools that work to kickstart a student’s progress and set them on a solid path towards remedial success.
The pillars of our approach are evidence based and grounded in Structured Literacy.
Multi-sensory strategies
We offer students multi-sensory tools and strategies that help them process language using visual, auditory, kinesthetic/tactile learning pathways, simultaneously. If there’s a weakness in one particularly area, they will be using all their senses to compensate. It leads to more effectively processing and longer-term retention of concepts. In addition, we offer a variety of creative and active learning experiences that make learning to read and write fun and engaging.
Direct and explicit instruction
Orton-Gillingham has identified hundreds of patterns and consistencies in English, turning language into a math and science. We use direct and explicit instruction to teach these patterns and consistencies to our learners. It makes learning to read logical, comprehensive, and easier to digest.
Student-centered learning
The one-to-one remedial process starts with an Orton-Gillingham based assessment that identifies a student’s literacy gaps. We then build out a customised learning plan that targets the specific needs of the learner. During the assessment, we take an inventory of the student’s likes and interests and fill the learning space with as much of the student as possible. We know that the more a learner can see themselves within the space, the more they’ll take away from the experience.
Basic to complex
After identifying the most foundational and basic literacy gaps that the student is struggling with, we create a scope and sequence that moves from basic to complex. We make sure that each learner is successful as they tackle new challenges and learning objectives so that they gain confidence in their ability to read and write.
Nicole Murray, Parent, Toronto
“I cannot say enough good things about my experience with TLC. My son used to shut down completely when trying to read (grade 2) and I knew he needed more help than I could provide. I found TLC and put him in the 1 week intensive program over the summer and he had a blast. Working with Jessica just for that one week I could see a huge difference in his demeanour and attitude around learning. We continue to work with Jessica twice per week virtually and my son just adores her and I see improvements in his reading and most importantly, his confidence! I know it will not be a quick process but I feel like he's learning the foundations of reading and he feels supported, so happy I found them!!”
